What Is Cervical Screening?
...and why it matters

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Most cases are caused by long term HPV infection which often shows no symptoms at all. So even if you feel fine, screening is important.

Cervical screening is a simple test that checks for the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV) which can cause changes to the cells of the cervix and can lead to cervical cancer if left untreated.

This test has replaced the old 2 yearly Pap smear and is now recommended every 5 years for most people 25 to 74. It’s a small change that offers even better protection.
Screening allows us to catch cell changes early, well before they become cancer. With early detection treatment is simpler, outcomes are better and peace of mind is greater.

Cervical screening is not about catching cancer, it’s about preventing it.

Who Should Have the Test?

If you’re between 25 and 74 years old, have a cervix, and are sexually active (or have ever been), regular cervical screening is important even if you feel perfectly healthy, and even if you’ve had the HPV vaccine.

You’ll usually be due for your first test two years after your last Pap smear, and then every five years if your results are normal.

If you’re unsure whether you’re due, just give us a call. We’re happy to check for you.

What to Expect

We know for many people cervical screening can feel a bit uncomfortable or even intimidating. Please know at New Bay Medical your comfort and dignity are our number one priority.

The test is quick and takes less than 15 minutes. You’ll be in a private room with a female doctor or nurse who will explain everything to you clearly and gently. If you have any concerns we’ll take the time to listen and adjust accordingly.

We also offer self-collection for eligible patients. This means you can take your own swab in a private space at the clinic. It’s just as accurate and many people find it more comfortable. Ask us if this is an option for you.

Cervical Screening FAQs

The cervical screening test isn’t painful but can be a bit uncomfortable. Most people describe it as a quick pressure. If you’re anxious we’ll take it slow and make your comfort a priority.
Try to avoid having your cervical screening test during your period as menstrual blood can affect the results. Book for a time when your period has finished. If you’re unsure call us for advice.
An abnormal result from your cervical screening doesn’t mean you have cervical cancer. It usually means changes to the cells of your cervix that need monitoring or further testing. Our doctors will explain what your result means and guide you through what to do next.
Yes. Even if you’ve had the HPV vaccine regular cervical screening is still necessary. The vaccine doesn’t cover all types of HPV so screening is still important in preventing cervical cancer.
