Skin Cancer Checks and Procedures

Looking after your largest organ, one spot at a time.

Skin Cancer Checks and Mole Removal
Melbourne, Brighton

Did you know the skin is the body’s largest organ? It’s a pretty big deal! Your skin plays a critical role when it comes to keeping you safe, so it’s always a good idea to look after it as well as it looks after you.

While your skin helps to protect you from the outside world, it can develop problems of its own. When you’re unsure if that’s a dangerous mole or a smudge from the kids’ breakfast (and we’ve all been there), a skin check can make all the difference.  Our caring team are here to provide skin checks and procedures to as many people in the Bayside local communities as possible including suburbs such as Bentleigh, Caulfield South, Elwood, Gardenvale, Hampton & Sandringham.

Skin Checks at Newbay Medical

Skin Checks at Newbay Medical Clinic

Skin checks are just as vital to our overall health and wellbeing as bowel cancer screenings and Pap smears; however, they’re often overlooked or delayed. At Newbay Medical Clinic, we provide skin checks to determine skin conditions, monitor changes and detect skin cancers. Finding a skin cancer lesion early can be the difference between an in-office 30-minute procedure and needing a large area resected by a plastic surgeon, so when you notice a change, don’t delay in getting it checked out!

Our Skin Procedures

At Newbay Medical Clinic, we provide skin checks and identify and remove lesions whenever possible. For lesions outside of our scope of practice, we call upon our trusted referral network of dermatologists and plastic surgeons in the Bayside area.

Your Skin Questions Answered

The number of treatments you may need will vary depending on your individual circumstances, such as your skin condition and the size and location of any lesions.
It is difficult to provide cost transparency with such an individualised service, as costs vary widely depending on the required procedure, how long it may take, and the equipment needed. Please discuss these with your doctor during your appointment.
Anybody who is concerned about their skin should get a skin check, no matter their age. Your doctor will discuss your risks with you to determine how frequently you should have your skin checked. Generally, people over 50 have a higher risk of skin cancers and should get a skin check at least once a year.
While ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for the majority of skin cancers, genes and other factors such as chemicals and pollutants can cause skin cancer to develop anywhere on the body.
Most health insurance policies will cover skin checks, but it’s best to confirm with your provider to be sure. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Australia, so getting regular check-ups is important for early detection.
The Australian government recommends that everyone over the age of 18 should have a regular skin check every 12 months. If you have a family history of skin cancer, or if you have any other risk factors, you may need to be checked more frequently.
During a skin check, your doctor will examine your skin from head to toe, looking for any unusual moles or changes in your skin. They will also ask about any changes you may have noticed yourself. If anything suspicious is found, a biopsy may be taken. This is a simple procedure where a small sample of tissue is removed and sent for further testing.
We suggest people begin getting regular skin checks from the age of 18, or earlier if they have any risk factors for skin cancer. However, it’s never too late to start getting checked – no matter your age, skin cancer can affect anyone.
We suggest getting a routine skin check completed once per year . However, if you have a family history of skin cancer or any other risk factors, you may need to be checked more frequently. It’s always best to speak with your doctor to find out what’s best for you.
