Newbay Medical Clinic prides itself on providing the highest quality care every time you walk through our doors. We understand that iron is crucial for your health and well-being. Our staff includes knowledgeable, experienced, and reassuring physicians. But, not everyone can tolerate iron tablets. Iron infusions may be an useful way to obtain the iron you require quickly, safely, and efficiently.

What is an Iron Infusion?
Iron is a mineral in your blood that helps blood to carry oxygen through your body. Because iron is so important in our daily lives, we want to make sure that everyone has enough iron. But, not everyone can tolerate iron tablets. Introducing: Iron infusions!
During an iron infusion, iron is given directly through a vein via an IV. This is called intravenous iron or IV iron. For this procedure, we mix iron with a saline solution and (gently!) place a needle or cannula in your arm or back of your hand. Your iron levels will increase as the iron solution travels directly to your iron storage.
Is an Iron Infusion Right For Me?
- Can’t tolerate oral iron due to side effects
- Are unable to absorb oral iron
- Have ongoing blood loss where oral iron can’t keep up with your needs
- Need iron quickly, for example before major surgery or during pregnancy
- Are receiving EPO hormonal treatment

Why Do I Need Iron?
A iron infusion procedure returns your blood iron level to the normal range. Adequate levels of iron offer benefits such as:

Breathing Easier
Iron helps to carry oxygen through your body, meaning more air for your lungs to use.

Have More Energy
Low iron levels can make you feel tired and fatigued. This is something that no one needs.

Maintain Healthy Cells
Healthy cells are not only good for your health, but they also make your skin, hair, nails and skin look better.

Keep You Steady
Inadequate iron levels can make you feel dizzy and off-balance due to a lack of oxygen in the red blood cells.

Improved Immune System
Iron is essential for a healthy immune system and fights infection.

Keep You Warm
Low iron levels can make you more sensitive to the cold- no more teeth chattering!
Answers to your Iron Infusion Questions
To discuss your suitability for an iron infusion, please book an initial appointment with one of our GPs. If you are deemed fit for an iron infusion, we will arrange for the procedure. A blood test is done to determine if an iron infusion is appropriate and how much should be administered.
The actual procedure takes about 30 minutes. We also allow 30 minutes for you to be monitored for allergic reactions. Allow at least an hour for your iron infusion.
One in ten patients could experience flu-like symptoms after receiving an iron infusion. This includes muscle aches, mild fever, or headaches. Anaphylaxis or allergic reactions are very rare side effects. This is why we keep you monitored and have qualified staff available to assist you if required.
All our doctors at Newbay Medical Clinic are certified in IV cannulas for iron infusion delivery. Paravenous leakage, which can lead to permanent brown spots on the skin, can happen despite the best practices for insertion and administration of the IV cannula. Before you have your procedure, please discuss this issue with your doctor.
Simply go about your daily life! Fasting isn’t necessary. Eat as normal and take all your usual medications.
Iron infusion patients are able to drive themselves home, resume normal activities, and then drive home. However, if you experience an unexpected reaction, you will need somebody to take you home.
Although iron levels in the blood immediately improve, it may take two weeks for you to start to notice an improvement in your energy and overall well-being.
As part of our cost transparency model of care, please find below a breakdown of costs associated with an iron infusion at Newbay Medical Clinic:
